red hot chilli peppers - carnt stop

this video is a disjuntion this means it has no relavance to the lyrics or title of the song however they use alot of random shots to keep the audience intrested like they use some performance shots of them playing and they simple seem to be just messing around and having fun maybe to show the audience how there life is and how all they have is fun even when filming a serious music promo. this video is very typical of the music genre as they are just throwing everything around and are dressing up in no clothing or weird clothing

codplay - the scientist

this video is a amplification video which mean it takes ideas from the lyrics and narrative and develops them futher this video is very clever and uses many techniques. this video is unconventional in the way instead of a story starting from the beggining it starts at the end which makes the viewer want to watch on and think why he is where is is and how did he get there. the video does not contain any porformance however there is some lipsyncing however because the video is backwards the lead vocalist had to learn all the lyrics backwards and when recording this song would of singed the song backwards however not all shots we being reversed some you can clearly tell he is simple walking backwards

man overboard - where i left you

disclosure- latch

This video is an illustration which means it links in with the lyrics and have created their own video in the sense the video has no one from there group in there video and have created a video which revolves around the word latch in the sense how people latch on to each other and hold on to people this is all done in a party settings and other location which you would expect people just to meet. The music changes with the beat and it moves very nicely and freely because when the beet changes it changes shot and you feel almost ready to changes shot and it’s smooth therefor it’s not jumpy. Uses placement of the actors to focus the point off the shot on them by placing them in to the centre of the shot. Uses links from the song to the album to promote there album. They use both straight and homosexual couples to show anyone can have this feeling or connection with another person.

30 seconds to mars- this is war

The video is quite unconventional of 30 seconds to mars as they often do quite unusual things and nothing linked to the song title and like to go “all out” in this they have linked with the video and have given it a story which they don’t normally do and they include all band members not just lead singer and use clips from historical parts of history to link with people and to let people understand there video more easily. They use techniques like slow motion to show dramatic parts in there song and also they often put pauses in their songs because they like when performing live to interact with the crowd this is why often there are pauses in there videos however as the video progresses it starts to go unconventional even more and things happen which you wouldn’t understand and they link there album to at the end with a pyramid which is the symbol for their album which is a pyramid the narrative behind the video is to do with fighting and to fight for what you believe in and to fight for your religion and what you believe in because if you don’t then what else do you have. Uses a powerful text at the beginning saying if we don’t end war, war will end us meaning that if we don’t stop it soon it will consume us and the video then links in the way how we are destroying the thing we wage war with. Uses sounds from live audiences to give you a feel of being there

Passenger wrong direction

A member of my class decided to share this video with us and the video links with the title and lyrics of the song in the way firstly he was sat playing the guitar to show some performance in the video but then changes and he on a green screen running forward however the green screen shows him running the wrong direction to which her is facing there for links with the lyrics and uses a few pan shots and is quite unconventional in a music video also the way people who are not in the band picking stuff up and changing the location is quite unconventional as it normally just shows the band and actors. Cuts are slow to go with the song as it is acoustic and it goes well with the song as it is a calm slow passed song. He links the video with lyrics in the way he says when he’s a kid and it shows old furnishing to show us how old he is possibly. The narrative of the song is about a man getting lost and always going in the wrong direction to the way he needs to be going being shown through the different scene and is always doing the same thing

types of promos

Illustration – the promo basically illustrates the ideas/ narrative n the song lyrics

Amplification- the promo uses a key idea / image from the lyrics and develops it

Disjuncture – the promo bears no resemblance to the lyrics or it meaning often seen as unconventional

conventions of the music promo

Conventions of camera work

Uses close ups and mid shots to show the instruments and performers close up to identify them and shows them playing panning and tracking to show movement through the story of the video if it has one. They sometimes in a heavy metal song use a 1st person shots and the view of the audience. They sometimes will normally look in to the camera which breaks the rules of conventions because when you film the actor or band shouldn’t look in to the camera

Conventions of editing / editing effects

They usually cut to the beat of the song and depending on the genre it will depend on the genre. They often used sound effects and visual effect in the older videos not so much with modern videos and they now often use a green screens to place the band in a location which is less cost effects

Conventions of mise-en-scene

Use of instruments to show that they are actually playing however often in pop they show no instruments because they are just vocalists also how the location links to the genre of the music and often involve a cast in all genres. Costume depends on genre because pop will be less clothed people appealing to a younger market and then metal does not depend on costume because you are there for the music.

Conventions Narrative / performance

Links with lyrics throughout the video however bands are more linked with live performances and will also often use Intertextuality. Narratives can make you want to watch the video over and over again. Narrative is often not conventional and does not have a start middle and an end

alien ant farm - smooth criminal

This song video is very unusual and has some Intertextuality in it however at first they are placed in a ring playing this song and this may represent how they feel that they are “king of the ring” and how they are the best and how all the people round they are in superior or maybe it’s just a way to show how it’s another way to play your songs in the way it’s still an arena and the people round the side are still the crowd but instead of doing a music video in an expensive arena they twisted it . then towards the second half off the video they introduce Intertextuality in the way they take Michael Jackson song Billie jean and Michael himself in the way he has a monkey just sitting there following him, around and the floor lighting up when he walks this is just a cool idea they took from another artist however in the video it does not feel as if they are trying to make a joke out of it and that they are taking it seriously

blink 182 - first date

Throughout this song it shows them having a good time just socialising and having fun it starts with an introduction to the video seen in the middle shot to suggest the start of a memory or a scene in which we are going to find out what happens this is a technique often used to show development through a story and give the viewer a time and a date to this video making it feel more realistic. Also the title of the song is FIRST DATE this would give the date another meaning now because we now this is the day of his first date the lyrics also tell us this and how he felt at the time of his first date. The third screen shot shows them mimicking the bee gees almost mocking them by copying there clothing and the way they walk etc. this is something the viewer can relate to this is called Intertextuality  this technique is used frequently because it makes the video more interesting to watch and  gives the viewer something to laugh about. The first shot shows them entering a garage and starts to play the song and sing the lyrics but as the song begins we cut to almost like a flash back and how these lyrics link back to this story.

panic! at the disco - music video how it links with genre

This video links in with the genre of music and the song title through its use of camera work and use of costumes and props like they start off with a shot of the bible to relate to sins which lead us to think about the sins which people are not supposed to go against. Also all of the actors used in the video have unusual clothing and make up which relates to the genre of music this band are from which is indie/punk which you would think when you hear that genre to expect a video you haven’t seen before as all are different and are unique unlike pop videos which are often the same. However even with the weird clothing etc. there is still a story behind this video about a marriage which goes wrong and the groom finds out his wife to be is cheating on him which goes back to religion how marriage is a sacred thing and should not be abused

snoop dog beautiful - music video how it links with genre

The video links with the lyrics and the video this is shown through the screen shots and how nearly all shots in the video include “beautiful” women and the lyrics will link with the parts of the video and the specific girl on screen. The video and lyrics are also tied in with the type of genre snoop dog would normally do and it shows his relaxed life style and how he lives a great life full of picking up girls anywhere he goes. Clothing is important in videos like this because it appeals to certain sex because of the way the men are always more clothed in every situation in that video. All these things you would associate with rap artist or rnb because they all like to express their life styles and how they live with their fast cars etc.

radio street spirit fade out

These two shots show the singer of the band to be falling and then to be laying on top of a car dead suggesting he falling down to his death and he comes down from the top the show this by using a long shot to show his whole body to show where and what he is doing in the shot. They use a black and white effect to show darkness through this period and how he is going through a dark time as he is close to death and how he is slowly fading out from the world shown by the pace of the music it is slow and calm and he slowly fades out. The editing of the shots is also slow paced to     fit with the music and not make the viewer feel uncomfortable watching it

They show multiple shots of people falling to show the fall from the top to show that maybe something has happened to them and that’s why they are in the middle of the desert

when they edit this video they use lots of fade in and out shots to show how people just come and go and can fade out of society and slowly fade back in as well

naughty boy la la la

The first shot shows us the story of how he is gathering follower to help him on his journey and how he is there to protect them they use a mid to long shot to show the movement in the scene and how the boy is on his journey and gathered his first company they try to represent the film and book wizard of oz. through costumes and characters like the dog and the man in silver to represent tin man and the dog and the lion

The second shot they are trying to advertise their album by displaying it on a TV in the middle of the desert which is impossible because the TV could not work out there with no electricity therefor it draws your attention and people will rewind to see what it said as it is unseal and eye catching and a clever technique to use. It is also to show their journey and using the train track as the yellow brick road to represent what there following to get to the location

This is a long shot used to show the audience they have arrived to show they have stop to look over at the place it is used to show the story is nearly over meaning the song is too

intertextual reference

Robbie Williams’s uses the same techniques in makeup dancing and facial expressions to show like a crazy feel to the video as in the video he say the word “crazy” which looks appropriate as he use white make up and the black being very distinctive. Throughout the video he does actions which you would associate with kiss like smashing up your guitar etc. I think that in batman they took the idea of the jokers make up from kiss in the whole sense of looking a bit wild and crazy to give the whole feel to the movie as you would watching a music video made by kiss. Both Robbie William’s and the joker both jump around and move about and get excited like kiss would on a live stage as th4ey would be jumping around

Robbie’s William’s is making references to rock and roll by using make up from kiss and taking a reference from history when ozzy Osborne bit the head of a bat on stage live and recreating it in his own way which only certain people would get the reference

all of these references except for the joer a pointed towards rock and roll and events or bands which have made a significant impact on the history of the music industry however the joker has used the make up from kiss because people would think they looked weird with all that make up on so the director took the idea and changed it in to a clever idea which has stuck with the joker through out the history of him

naughty boy la la la narrative

Narrative

Relates to the wizard of oz. in the sense that the dog is the lion the guy who gets a heart is tin man and the boy is Dorothy on an adventure

Hotel kabana

Shows close ups on the heart to show the representation trying to be shown by it

And the guy in the costume resembles a scare crow to give us the idea of the story line

It is centre framed on the TV to show the albums name to leave a message to the audience

Based on a urban legend showing the story through a music video giving the sense the video is the main thing and not the song
